Chapter Eighteen

‘There’s no point in us hanging around here any longer, Donal,’ Maureen said, having finished her tea. She’d rung both Roisin and Patrick back to confirm that yes, Moira was pregnant and yes, Aisling had her nose out of joint given she and Quinn were wanting to start a family themselves. Oh, and yes, both girls were holed up in their bedrooms with faces on them that would curdle the milk. And, no it would take more than a packet of Snowballs to fix things.

When they’d stopped exclaiming over the family bombshell, she’d managed to drop in her and Donal’s exciting news. The news however of the offer they’d made that morning on their dream house overlooking the sea fell rather flat after all the drama of the other. The wind had gone out of Maureen’s sails with a big whoosh. There was no point gushing about it when she didn’t have a rapt audience.

Yes, she mused again, picking her and Donal’s empty cups up and carrying them over to the sink, it was all very disappointing.

Quinn had reappeared while she’d been in conversation with Patrick and he’d chatted with Donal out of earshot until Maureen had gotten off the telephone. Now he turned his focus to Maureen.

‘I think it’s Ash’s hormones has her behaving like so, Maureen. She’s all over the show lately,’ he offered up lamely. ‘I’ll leave her be for a while.’

‘She’s never been any different, Quinn. She’s very single-minded is Aisling, sets her heart on something and that’s all she can think about. She’ll come right and if she’s not out of her room in an hour you could try frying some bacon, that usually has her come running,’ Maureen soothed.

She also knew from experience when her girls stomped off to their bedrooms it was the best place for them. Give them a few hours to cool off and they’d be grand. Or, at least she hoped they would. They were in unchartered waters. ‘Anyway, we’ll leave you to it.’

Quinn looked as though he’d very much not like to be left to it.

‘Pooh will be desperate for a walk,’ Maureen added, reading his expression.

‘Fair play,’ he sighed and then remembering what Donal had told him said, ‘Oh and congratulations on the new house. I’m sure Aisling will be made up for you.’

‘Thank you.’ She gave her son-in-a-law a squeeze and pat on the back then, feeling rather like she was leaving him aboard a sinking ship, she and Donal took to the stairs.

When they reached reception there was no sign of James manning the front desk and perturbed, Maureen poked her head around the door to the guests’ lounge. She spotted him with his nose glued to the window.

‘What are you gawping at there, James?’

James jumped and turned away from whatever had grabbed his attention to address Maureen, his face anxious. ‘Oh howya, Mrs O’Mara? I was about to ring upstairs to ask Aisling to come down. I’m not sure what to do. I told them they’re trespassing if they try to come inside.
